Last year I made some fantastic giant bubble wands and super strong bubble mix with the kids which I shared over on Kenarry.com.The girls loved this so much that they were badgering me to make some again.

They are so cheap and simple to make but provide hours of entertainment for the kids.

Supplies Needed To Make Big Bubbles

For The DIY Bubble Wands

  • A pair of sticks that are roughly the length of your child’s arm (you can use sticks collected in the woods or some wooden doweling from a DIY Hardware Store)
  • Cord / Rope or string
  • Washers or nuts (or anything else that can add a little bit of weight)
  • Eye Pin Screws (or screw hooks)

For The Super Strong Giant Bubbles Solution

  • 1 x cup washing-up liquid/dish detergent (the quality brands usually work a bit better)
  • 4 x cups lukewarm water
  • 2-4 x tablespoons Glycerin
  • Large plastic container
  • Wooden Spoon

First, screw an Eye Pin Screw ontothe end of each stick (I didn’t have any eyelets at home but I did have some hooks so I just used them and used some pliers to close the open bit of the hook).

Now cut a 1 x 1mtr and 1 x 2mtr length of string or Cotton Cord(you can use anything for this but just make sure this is not too lightweight or too thin). If you have younger children you may want to adjust the size of the cord so they don’t get in a tangle.

Feed one of the ends from both pieces of cord through one of the eyelets and securely tie it off (you can see in the picture above how I threaded mine)

Next, you need to use a nut or washer to weight the longer length (it’s better if they are a bit weighty but if not you can always add a couple).

Thread this onto the longer length and tie the remaining two ends to the other stick. This should create a sort of triangle shape when you hold the sticks up (see picture below).

Decorating Your Giant Bubble Wands

If you do want to go the extra step and decorate them then you can use things like washi tape, acrylic paint, or by simply wrapping coloured wool around the sticks.

My Girls plumped for the washi tape as we already had it at home and it was quick to do.

How To Make The Super Strong Giant Bubble Solution

We actually got the basic recipe to make super-strong bubbles from a man at a local fair who was doing this as an activity for the kids. He told us the secret ingredient that you needed to stop the bubbles from popping so easily was glycerin.

After a bit of playing about with his recipe, we found this to be the best mix.

Carefully pour the water, washing-up liquid (dish detergent), and glycerin into the large plastic container (we used an old plastic storage container). Use the wooden spoon to gently stir the solution (if you are too rough then it will froth up too much and then it won’t work very well).

Tips When Making Your Giant Bubble Solution

If the bubble solution is not working then just add a little more washing-up liquid and glycerin until it works. You will find that the more you play with the bubble mix the better it will get.

My girls were not very patient and wanted to play straight away. In the beginning, it was hard to get a big bubble without it popping first. But ….. after a bit of playing around it ended up making really big and beautiful bubbles.

For parties, I would suggest that you make the bubble mix the day before as the solution actually gets better overnight.

And be warned, make plenty of the solution if you are doing it for a party as everybody will want a go (including the adults). My girls took it out into the street to play and within 10 minutes half the neighborhood wanted to join in with the fun.

So now you know how to make giant bubbles you can make some yourself. Your kids will love you for it!
