Super Bowl LVIII has now been set as the reigning champions the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers. Patrick Mahomes led his team to a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game while the Niners overcame the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship contest.

It means fans will see a rematch from the 2020 Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won 31-20 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. This was the eleventh Super Bowl hosted by the South Florida region and the sixth Super Bowl hosted at the Stadium.
Both teams won 15 games and lost four throughout the season to reach the showpiece event and it was all to play for. Kansas City was searching for its first Super Bowl win in 50 years while the 49ers were aiming to end their 26-year championship drought.
The Chiefs were led by their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was searching for his first championship while Jimmy Garoppolo, who played for the Niners at the time, was trying to win his third ring, his first as a starter having been backup to Tom Brady at the New England Patriots.
The first half was very competitive and there was very little between the two teams. The game was tied 10-10 at halftime - but exploded into life after the break.

After a spectacular halftime show by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, the Niners started the second half on the front foot. A Robbie Gould field goal and a touchdown run by Raheem Mostert gave the 49ers a 20–10 lead by the end of the third quarter.
But in the final six minutes of the game, the Chiefs raised their level and completed two touchdown drives. Mahomes threw touchdown passes to Travis Kelce and Damien Williams, which put them ahead with two minutes left.
As the Niners tried to make a comeback, they were stopped on defense and a Chiefs win was sealed courtesy of a late touchdown run by Damien Williams, as well as a key interception by Kendall Fuller, which saw the Chiefs make history. In the process coach Andy Reid won the first Super Bowl of his coaching career and Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP.

His performance of 26 of 42 pass attempts for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, as well as rushing for 29 yards and one touchdown, made him the outstanding player on the field as he guided his team to victory. Mahomes added another Super Bowl MVP to his list of accolades after leading the Chiefs to a sensational victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 to lift the Vicne Lombardi Trophy for the second time.
The quarterback and his Chiefs teammates will look to successfully their title on Feb. 11 against the Niners, who will be led by a different quarterback in the form of Brock Purdy. The Niners have not won the Super Bowl since 1994 and they will need to produce an inspired performance to beat the defending champions, who defeated them 44-23 when they last played in October 2022.
